Local Authorities

The UK Government recognises the importance of Travel Plans in achieving improvements in transport conditions at the local level. Travel Plans have become an essential tool for the delivery of national, regional and local transport policy.

In particular, Travel Plans and their promotion are recognised as one of the six key objectives for Local Transport Plans (and Local Transport Strategies in Scotland), making them an integral part of the delivery of transport policy at a local level.

Local authorities have the power to request Travel Plans through the development planning process. In addition, most local authorities have established School Travel Plan coordinators, responsible for assisting local schools better manage their travel impacts. There are also many good examples of local authorities working with large scale employers in the local area to develop workplace Travel Plans.

Of course, local authorities also have an obligation to reduce greenhouse gases across their internal operations. A carbon-efficient Travel Plan is therefore an important tool.

With proper consideration, Travel Plans can be a fundamental tool to achieve the vision for transport in the local area.
